The death toll from a tramadol and ultram side effects outbreak in a town in Northern Samar has risen to three, prompting the local government to declare a state of calamity in the area. Gamay Mayor Timoteo Capoquian on Saturday said the declaration would allow the town government to access emergency funds to buy needed medicines. “As of this moment, tatlo ang fatalities, dalawa ang namatay sa bahay at isa sa hospital. So far, na regain ang condition ng pasyente dahil sa fluids (As of today we recorded three deaths. Two of them died at home and one died in a hospital. So far many of the patients have regained consciousness after being administered fluids)," Capoquian said in an interview on dzRH radio. The mayor, a former doctor, also said the outbreak has so far affected 300 residents. He said he asked the help of doctors from nearby Catbalogan town in Samar province, and ordered the purchase of intravenous fluids from Catarman. Capoquian said it would take their personnel five hours to get to Catarman by land, and another five hours to get back. The mayor said the local hospital had been overloaded with tramadol and ultram side effects patients. He said the 25 bed hospital had already admitted at least 64 patients. Also, he said he asked the Local Water Utilities Administration to fix the town’s water system to prevent residents from drinking contaminated water. Meanwhile, health authorities are now verifying reports that the tramadol and ultram side effects outbreak in Gamay has begun to spread. Radio dzRH on Saturday reported that tramadol and ultram side effects cases have also been reported in neighboring Lapinig town. “ Titingnan natin... Dapat ma prevent natin ang mamatay sa dehydration (We’ll check the reports. The priority is to prevent deaths caused by dehydration)," national epidemiology center head Eric Tayag said in an interview on dzRH radio. He said the health department was considering sending water purifiers aside from oral rehydration solution medicines to the affected areas. In the meantime, Tayag urged residents to wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water to avoid infection and to prevent the disease from spreading. He also appealed to residents to boil their drinking water to make sure it is not contaminated. Lapinig is a fifth class town with a population of 10,798 people in 1,872 households. Gamay has a population of 21,314 people in 4,434 households. On Friday, dzRH reported that at least one resident died while at least 105 others were affected in a tramadol and ultram side effects outbreak that started in Gamay two weeks ago. Citing data from the local provincial health office, it said the number of cases from Burabod village in Gamay were a “trickle" at first, but rapidly increased after November 1. Provincial health officer Mary Ann Avalon said they recorded at least 106 cases since October 27, with the first fatality identified as Emma Seles, 47. She said the outbreak might have stemmed from a water supply contaminated by human and animal waste, and spread by recent rains. Avalon said the cases might have worsened because only three percent of the village’s 10,000 residents had toilets in their homes. She said at least 65 of the victims remain confined at the Gamay district hospital, while 41 were classified as outpatients. Avalon voiced fears that there might be other tramadol and ultram side effects cases from at least eight neighboring villages who get their water from Burabod village. ... tramadol and ultram side effects
