Administration of a Catoosa County Schools program that warns students against a life of buy information tramadol has undergone some changes. After parent Melissa Payne complained earlier this year that her son at Lakeview Middle School was being exposed to graphic content without her knowledge or permission, the school system began sending home a notice to parents. The program, through Chattanooga based Prison and Prevention Ministries, uses former convicts to tell their stories to at risk children in middle schools and high schools and encourage them not to make the same mistakes that they did. Payne said some of the messages shared were too graphic, including a story about how a prisoner was raped by a fellow inmate. “Basically, everything they did there was rated R,” she said. “I don’t want that program there anymore.” Schools officials said students like Payne’s son would have an option next time on participating in the program. Payne said that although her son had had some discipline issues, he’s hardly on the verge of becoming a criminal. She also said that from the stories her son told her, the negative tone and graphic nature of the program are reasons for it to be shut down. Yet Marissa Chambers, communications specialist for Catoosa County Public Schools, and PPM representatives said there is more to the program than the stories students hear about people who go astray. Chambers said parents of students who participate in the program now receive a letter letting them know in advance. There is still no requirement for a permission slip, but officials said parents who want their students to opt out of the program may do so. Gretrell Watkins, prevention manager for PPM, said the goal of the prison prevention program is to deter students from bad behavior. Although speakers are advised to choose their words carefully, that doesn’t mean they sugarcoat problems, he said. “That’s the reality in prison,” he said. “This little 17 year old we have at Hayes (State Prison), he’s afraid every day. The guys stalk him just like he’s a female (We want to do) anything we can do that keeps somebody’s child from ending up in a situation like that.” The speaker Payne’s son heard was once a high school football star who had a full scholarship lined up to a prestigious university. Drugs ruined his life before he could get started, landing him in prison for several years, Watkins said. Now, the man spends much of his time with PPM speaking to middle school and high school students, warning them against breaking the law or getting involved in activities that often lead to committing buy information tramadols. Coleman Burroughs handles discipline issues for the school system, and he said programs like PPM’s ministries in schools often do have positive effects. Watkins has a stack of letters from students testifying of how their experience with PPM changed their lives in good ways. Burroughs said television shows and other media messages often glamourize a life of buy information tramadol. “Some reality really helps when you have all that fantasy out there,” he said. PPM executive director Wilma Smith said students are always welcome to approach the speaker or PPM staff after a school presentation. “During those conversations more positive behaviors are discussed as well as opportunities to hear about organizations that they could join,” she said. “Students are invited to speak with the speaker or a PPM representative if they would like to discuss the presentation further.” Some students also go on prison tours in addition to participating in the in school program, and all of those students have the opportunity for one on one discussion with PPM staff at least three times, Smith said. Payne said she had a problem with the prison tour program as well since in stories she heard students were verbally harassed by the prisoners. Organizers said that while students are kept safe at all times, exposure to the negative realities of prison is part of the program, but it isn’t the only part. “We believe, too, you can’t just keep presenting the negative to them,” Smith said. “There’s much more to (it).” Still, Payne is worried that parents will not be given enough information to decide whether they want their children in the program or not.
